Today BBC's Blue Peter celebrates it's 50th Birthday in style with a tea party at Buckingham Palace arranged by the Queen. Presenters past and present have been invited, as well as four lucky viewers who won a competition to attend the event.

Generations of us have grown up with the programme that aims to keep children informed. It has a successful mixture of exciting and interesting stories that both teach and educate as well as entertain our children.

So congratulations Blue Peter, on being the worlds longest running TV programme, and let's hope the programme continues to achieve those objectives for the next 50 years, ever changing with the times to stay current and relevant to each new generation of child viewers.

Martin Handford, the famous children's author and illustrator,  creator of the Where's Wally series of books has created a special 50th Birthday picture with the famous Wally character hidden in the scene.
