Fireworks displayThis year I will be changing my planned History lesson, and teaching the children about Bonfire Night and it's traditions. Children are always fascinated by fireworks and it makes much more sense to teach them about the History behind the day if they are going to spent a good part of the day talking 'fireworks' anyway!

I will be using the excellent Woodlands Junior School site on my Interactive whiteboard, with it's clear and straightforward information. It is aimed at KS2, but for this particular topic it will also suit my Year 2s very well. It has the basic history about Guy Fawkes and the Houses of Parliament, information about traditions and customs for the day and even a create your own virtual fireworks display, which I am hoping will be effective with the children touching the interactive whiteboard screen to create it.

We will learn about the history and customs and then talk about and make posters on firework safety. The younger the children learn about the potential dangers involved with fireworks, the better.

If you have older children you could try this online Guy Fawkes game, test your knowledge before the Houses of Parliament get blown up! Or try these other great free firework themed teaching resources, I will be using the firework bordered papers for our firework safety posters.

Enjoy the 5th November!
