Chinese New Year will this year be celebrated on the 26th January 2009, and this year it is the Year of the Ox. Kung Hei Fat Choi! Celebrations last for 2 weeks and end with the Lantern Festival, Teng Cheih on the full moon.

This is a great festival to learn about in school, as so many elements of it are really interesting to children. Loads of resources to support teaching this festival are available on the internet and we link to lots of the most suitable ones for each Key Stage in the relevant Festivals category.

Listen to the story of the animals and find out which animal you and your children are, according to the year of birth. Find out the history behind the dragon dance and watch a video of the dance.  Locate China on a world map or get your children to practise their fine motor skills with these Chinese Handwriting worksheets or write their own Chinese Writing using these word translations. Sing along with the traditional Chinese New Year song; Kung Hei Fat Choi.

Individual children can make their own Chinese New Year Pocket on the PC by typing in their own information and printing and folding the template. Download and print these free Animal or Zodiac posters with the dates of the animal years. You can even make your role play area into a Chinese Restaurant or make dragon puppets or use animal masks for the children to act out the story. The possibilities for the classroom are endless for this entertaining festival!
