Stuck for ideas on how to entertain your children at home this holiday? How about some simple Science experiments? At school, teachers have lots of children to organise and talk to. At home you can talk one to one to your children and get really involved in conversation with them about everything that is happening in an experiment and why. Even simple experiments can be huge learning experiences for them. You don’t need to be a scientific genius in any way. How about growing 2 sets of cress, 1 on a damp paper towel in the kitchen, and putting the other set in the cupboard to compare how well each set grew. Or plant a bean seed in soil in a clear plastic bag or pot, so that you can watch the root system grow and develop. (You can do this in a balloon too and hang it in front of the window.) If you are a little more adventurous try this exploding rockets experiment (with alka-seltzer, water and a film canister) which is cheap and simple and gives ‘Wow’ results to impress your children and get them really excited and interested. Make sure you do it in the garden or outdoors though! And if they’ve enjoyed that, then you could be really adventurous and move on to mints and fizzy drink (be prepared for a big mess!) or if you prefer, you could simply watch the experts doing it instead! Please don’t let your children try these alone! The bottles can go off quickly into faces, so children and adults need to move very quickly out of the way.
