The nominations are now open for these prestigious annual books awards. Although you need to be a member of CILIP (the chartered institute of library and information professionals), to submit a nomination, local libraries often run schemes for their members to vote for their local nomination. The CILIP Carnegie Medal is awarded for an outstanding book for children and young people, whilst the Kate Greenaway medal is awarded for an outstanding book for children and young people in terms of illustration. Nominations are open until October 24th 2008. Although you cannot directly nominate unless you are a member of CILIP, schools can get involved by joining the Shadowing scheme. The shadowing scheme invites its members to read and assess the shortlisted books by the same criteria used by the librarian judges. The children are invited to share their reviews with other reading groups and have them published online. There are materials such as bookmarks and membership cards available online to support schools in publicising the shadowing scheme. Children can read reviews of books nominated in from previous years online. Do you think your class would benefit from getting involved?
