September 8th each year is the day set aside by UNESCO to highlight the importance of literacy around the world. Despite growing awareness of the importance of literacy there are still 774 million adults around the world lacking minimum literacy skills. 20% of all adults are not literate and 66% of these are women. There are also 75 million children around the world not in schooling.
The focus of International Literacy Day for 2008 is 'Literacy is the best remedy', recognising the link between literacy and health.
